I've enjoyed reading all the comments, and I've been really tempted to jump in and try to clarify things, especially about the technology. This story however, is being narrated by Tanya, and I don't want the readers to know any more than she does about what's going on. And she knows very little, so I'll keep quiet.

I think I'm seeing what part of her problem is with science....

I, on the other hand, am finding the discussion quite interesting. :)

I actually like the writing of this. The guys are not being uppity or haughty but the girls definitely see it that way.

A cyclical magnetic pulse from the planet's core? Really?

They are pretty clear about just random-guessing right now.

And I am not even sure why they would bother with batteries right now. A dynamo would be way enough to do that work. And it should be workable using basic technology.

The thing is, batteries are solid state, and so are flashlights.
If they all stopped working, then we aren't talking a tech problem, we're looking at magic.
Or maybe I'm wrong - my understanding is an EMP messes up electronics because it basically wipes all memory - but a wire is a wire, before or after a pulse, and stuff without memory should still work.

I once read a novel "Ariel" about what would happen if some magic came along that stopped tech from working, so the idea isn't foreign to me...

A sufficiently powerful EMP can induce electric currents that heat up and destroy electronics. Fine wires also, but to do this on a planetary scale would require astronomical power.

I'm more inclined to think that whatever happened was deliberately induced, but by whom and for what purpose, Snowshadow has yet to reveal. I think it will be interesting.
